Last summer I went with my family to the resort of Cairns in Australia. We had a great time. The weather was perfect. There were beautiful beaches and lots of interesting places to visit, including tropical forests and mountains. My son really enjoyed the kangaroos and koalas at the zoo, and I was really glad of the time to just relax and walk around looking for good subjects to take pictures of with my camera.

All in all we were very happy for the ten days we spent in Cairns. The town itself is small, clean and safe with enough restaurants, shopping and nightlife to make it a good choice for a family holiday. There’s even a casino where I managed to win a couple of hundred dollars on the slot machines. My first (and probably last) win ever.

However, it wasn’t until the end of my vacation that I came to realize that keeping a resort like Cairns as beautiful as it is takes a lot of effort. On my last day there I decided to get up early to take a few last photos and I was amazed to find out how much activity went on to make the town fit for the thousands of tourists who arrive there each day.

From about 5 am a small army of cleaners takes away the rubbish and generally cleans up all the mess from the day before. There are guys who go around with large vacuum cleaners, others who rake the sand and pick up any stray trash. The man who cleans the giant swimming pool and the police who dash around on bicycles checking there are no problems before the tourists start arriving. Finally, there are the restaurant and café staff who set out all the tables and chairs ready for the first customers for the breakfast shift.

After watching all this effort I realized that it is easy to take it for granted. So I’d like to say a big thank you to all the hard working people in Cairns who helped to make my stay in the town so pleasant. Thanks guys.
