Good evening. This is ESLpodTV. My name is Bob Bobson and here is tonights main news.
This weeks main news is about the tragic death of the Australian naturalist and television personality Steve Irwin who was killed by a stingray during the making of a nature program off the coast of Queensland in north east Australia.
Mr Irwin 44 was filming the program in the Great Barrier Reef when he was stuck in the chest by the stingrays barb. He was rushed by helicopter to the nearby town of Cairns but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Stingrays are large, flat, venomous fish with a long tail with a barb that it uses to defend itself. Attacks on humans are very rare and it is possible that the stingray felt threatened before it attacked.
Mr Irwin was a very popular and colorful character famous for his work with Australian wildlife, particularly crocodiles, and his death has been seen as a great loss in Australia by people of all backgrounds. Since the news broke, the front of the zoo owned by the Irwin family has been turned into a virtual shrine with masses of flowers and cards left on a huge wooden crocodile near the gate.
Preparations for the funeral have not been finalized but suggestions have been made by the Prime Minister, John Howard that a state funeral could be allowed for Mr Irwin, depending on his familys wishes.
Thats all for tonights ESLTV news. This is Bob Bobson wishing you a pleasant evening. Goodnight.
